Following Peter David’s stint on DC’s second monthly Trek title, Howard Weinstein had big shoes to fill. But fill them he did, as his earliest stories, published in issues #17-21, illustrate. In addition to these issues, this volume presents the first Star Trek Annual, cowritten by David and George “Sulu” Takei. Hauntingly drawn by Gray Morrow, with a vibrant cover by Jerome K. Moore, it remains one of Sulu’s most poignant tales. The plot, concerning a culture forced to socially distance, as well as an extremist group ignorantly opposing efforts to help the afflicted, seems ripped out of today’s headlines, yet it was published in 1990.

In addition, this volume features outlines and scripts to several never-published Star Trek comic projects. Not only has Andy Mangels provided his script to Star Trek: Return of the Wolf, a “Wolf in the Fold” sequel he’d penned for DC Comics, but he, co-author Michael Martin, and editor Timothy Tuohy have granted permission to present fans with numerous unseen materials related to Marvel’s aborted series Star Trek: Phase 3, along with an unpublished story for Star Trek Unlimitedtitled “Reaping the Whirlwind.”
