The historic 5-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise^TM is over. But when three Klingon starships are destroyed by a massive machine/organism called the V’Ger, the Enterprise is refitted and the crew is asked to investigate.

An explosion rocks the bridge of the Enterprise. Most of the trainees are dead, shielding the main crew members. Captain James T. Kirk lays close to death. Spock takes a piece of shrapnel in the back right beside his spine. After Doctor Bones McCoy removes the metal, he informs Spock that a sliver still remains close to his spine and that Spock will need to become sufficiently healthy enough so that he can be operated on again to remove the sliver. Spock ignores Bones’ advice and walks out of sick bay and gets together with Mister Scott, the Chief Engineer. Together, they gather some evidence that points to a stranger being on board and planting the bomb.

Ravaged by a killer virus, the Romulans enter Canara, where the only antidote can be found. Desperate, they incite a victorious U.S.S. Enterprise^TM attack on one of their vessels, but Kirk discoves their ruse.

Meanwhile the central computer has fallen in love with him, severely crippling the Starship Enterprise^TM. Somehow Kirk must overcome the lovesick computer and bring the antidote to the Romulans, before the galaxy crashes over the brink of war.
